Lucy Clarke said: “Defo rubs a 2p wet piece on it. Works a treat.

Facebook user Erica, on the other hand, advised against using Viakal. She said: “Viakal takes the color and makes ours shine, so we use the Astonish spray. It’s incredible!”

Katie Buckley recommended a less conventional trick. She said, “Ketchup. Apply an equal amount over the entire surface. Leave on for about five minutes, then rub and wipe off. Once you’ve done that, use hot, soapy water. It should happen.

Claire Sutton wrote: “Any descaler, but be aware that you can see it is damaged underneath so when you remove it the chrome is already gone and it will be black in places. The limestone eats away at the thin layer of chromium.

Charlotte Bayldon added: “Any descaling spray may need a few applications. “
