Demand for specialty cleaning continues to grow

Hitches & Glitches (H&G), a Dubai-based, technology-focused and sustainable home cleaning specialist, part of the Farnek Group, is witnessing a significant increase in demand for specialist cleaning, particularly for data centers booming in the region.

The demand for data center cleaning is increasing due to the rapid growth of digital businesses across the region. Reliable data centers are essential, especially with the rapid escalation of internet technology and mobile connectivity. It is therefore not surprising that many companies are adopting secure, efficient and durable solutions for storing their data.

According to a report by Research & Markets, the data center market in the Middle East and Africa recorded investments of $6.55 billion in 2021, with investments expected to reach $12.19 billion over the past few years. next five years, growing at a CAGR of 10.90% over the period 2022-2027.

5G network deployment, IoT, smart cities and the fourth industrial revolution are fueling demand. In particular, countries like Israel, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt have all attracted significant investment in recent years. In the United Arab Emirates, Etisalat is the largest provider of data center services, with nine data centers spread across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

“Our experience over the past 18 months shows that the demand for professional data center cleaning services is increasing exponentially. Data center managers now want to hire a specialist company to provide high quality cleaning services in these complex environments,” said Zohaib Azhar, Operations Manager, Hitches & Glitches.

Data center equipment is highly sensitive and optimal performance is critical to their business. Equipment consists of switches, routers, hubs, UPS batteries, and racks that collect dust and debris like any other object. However, the cleaning process is sophisticated and technical.

Dust particles and conductive ferrous metals accumulated on circuit boards require highly trained and technically competent cleaners. Improper cleaning procedures can leave additional debris behind, which can lead to overheating and equipment malfunction. This also applies to all types of controlled environments, including data centers, data rooms, data lobbies, and server rooms.

According to H&G, if left unchecked, long-term contaminants could damage circuit boards, corrode metals, and cause disc and tape drives to fail, which can lead to failure. Data center cleaning must follow strict standard procedures, such as ISO 14644-1 2015 Class 8 which details the international cleaning procedure for controlled environments.

H&G has provided its controlled environment cleaning services to a range of sectors including government, telecommunications, marine, banking and infrastructure. This shows the importance and shift from traditional data center operations and maintenance (O&M) to a high degree of technical cleanliness and facility maintenance.

“Given the amount invested in data centers, the trend now is towards professional and specialized cleaning, to ensure that IT equipment is well maintained, continuously powered in a cool environment, with a high degree of cleanliness, mitigating risks of a serious failure or significant downtime,” added Azhar.

H&G always uses vacuum cleaners with high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) filters to remove dust and debris from IT equipment, which removes 99.97% of dust particles, bacteria, mold and metal particles . The surface of racks and doors is vacuumed and wiped with microfiber cloths.

“It’s also essential to work with the airflow to avoid kicking up dust which is then blown towards the area you have already cleaned. Smoke detectors under the floor should be cleaned with the soft brush attachment of the vacuum cleaner, while fire hoses should be cleaned efficiently from top to bottom where the dust is invisible,” Azhar said.
