Thirteen flights were canceled and fog restrictions are in place at Auckland Airport on Monday morning after the city was again hit by heavy fog.

This is the fourth time in a week that fog has covered the city. Fog caused travel chaos last week as highways were blocked and flights were cancelled.

Auckland Airport implemented fog restrictions at 4:36 a.m. Monday morning, and as of 7 a.m., 13 domestic regional flights were cancelled. There are no fog delays, a spokesperson said.

Flights departing to New Plymouth, Taupō, Bay of Islands, Whangārei, Palmerston North and Napier have been cancelled, as have arrivals from Nelson and Christchurch.

On Thursday, 22 Air New Zealand flights were cancelled, while on Friday 26 were cancelled.

MetService forecast morning fog that should turn to rain in the afternoon and evening. Auckland will have a high of 17C on Monday.

Auckland Transport has told ferry commuters to expect delays when traveling to and from Auckland CBD due to fog.

Most of the flights affected last week were turboprops – the small planes used for domestic service – which lack the instrument technology to allow pilots to “see” far enough in fog to land if they cannot. not use their eyes. Pilots must be able to see 800 meters in front of the aircraft to take off and land.
