How to organize the car

Here are some simple tips we used to control car clutter and create a more functional space for the whole family. After all, you spend a lot of time in your car. The bonus is that random things won’t roll in your car trunk when you spin a car.

1. Create zones

We have created a “bathroom zone” and a “summer fun zone” with shoe organizers. In the bathroom area I included diapers, wipes and hand sanitizer (yahoo, no need for a diaper bag anymore !!). We have also included “emergency” supplies for our newly trained child.

The summer fun zone has everything we would need for a quick trip to the pool or a trip to the park after a class / activity. It was super useful to me! No stress. Everything is there, from sunscreen to glasses, costumes and towels.

2. Give a whole household

Use the sheds (hope your car has them, they’re nice) to give houses to the random items that end up in the car. We usually have a trash bag there too.

Don’t forget emergency car supplies. You can’t see it in the photos, but on the left there is some sort of locker in the wall of my car. We keep a car charger and an air kit for the tires. You never know when you might need it.

3. Plan for the unexpected

Notice this large open space? That’s where our cooler goes, or the giant duffel bag, or the science project. Leave an open space to work. You will also want to have a first aid kit in your car. We keep ours in the glove box. You never know when you might need it.

Mini-van organization tips

Whether you’re driving a car or a minibus, keeping things organized will make trips and family outings more enjoyable.

It’s also easier to prepare for the unexpected when you can actually see what you already have to use!

Behind the backseat of the van, I like to keep the cargo area as organized and separate as possible.

  • Create a space or bin for sports equipment. In our case, I have large plastic boxes that hold the children’s swimming gear for swimming lessons, including their skateboards and life jackets.
  • Small children need a lot of things, so having a trunk organizer that can keep all those little items organized is the best trunk organizer of them all!
  • And don’t forget to leave room for commuting to the grocery store with all those plastic bags full of groceries… you’ll need some space for those grocery bags.
