Korean Home Test Kit Exports To US Soar Over Omicron Spread

Korean Covid-19 Test Device Manufacturers Actively Export Products to United States

Industry officials have said US demands for Korean test kits will increase for some time due to the continued spread of the Omicron variant.

Humasis said in a regulatory filing Monday that it had signed an agreement with Celltrion to deliver $ 43.5 million worth of antigen self-test kits to the United States. ) Last year.

The supply contract for the US market will be valid until February 28, 2022. Humasis, which has co-developed Covid-19 antigen diagnostic kits with Celltrion, manufactures Celltrion’s Covid-19 test kits.

U.S. demands for Korean Covid-19 home test kits have increased due to the spread of the Omicron variant, industry officials have said.

The large-scale supply agreement came after two companies’ DiaTrust COVID-19 Ag Home test received FDA approval for emergency use in October.

Celltrion, which distributes Covid-19 diagnostic devices in the United States through Celltrion USA, said it plans to provide DiaTrust COVID-19 Ag Home Test through online and offline distributors.

SD Biosensor also said on Monday that its Covid-19 Home Test COVID-19 Self-Test Kit had obtained emergency use clearance from the FDA. In addition, the company has formed a strategic partnership with Roche to seriously enter the US market.

SD Biosensor provides the COVID-19 At-Home test exclusively for Roche, as SD Biosensor is the Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). According to SD Biosensor, the home test kit offers a sensitivity of 95.3 percent and specificity of 100 percent.

SD Biosensor CEO Heo Tae-young said, “US demand for self-test kits increases as cases of Covid-19 increase due to the spread of the Omicron variant.”

Another Access Bio diagnostic kit maker, which has already obtained emergency use approval for its self-test kit in the United States, also predicted that sales of test kits in the United States would increase rapidly. . The U.S. government is distributing Covid-19 home test kits free of charge because home testing needs to be done thoroughly, the company said.

Access Bio focused on expanding the sales network in the United States through major drugstores and online sites, including Rite Aid, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, Wegmans, and Amazon.

“After obtaining FDA approval for emergency use in August, we started selling the kit in October. In just one month in November, sales of home test kits surpassed those of professional diagnostic kits, ”said an Access Bio official. “Sales of home testing devices will accelerate next year. “

The official went on to say that the global supply of Covid-19 diagnostic kits is in short supply as the world needs massive screenings rather than personalized testing.

“This is why the US government is supporting home testing with various policy measures,” he added.
