This year the service has been taken over entirely by the Mancomunidad – the association of towns and villages of the western Costa del Sol
This summer, Marbella has three boats cleaning up the sea along the city’s coastline. The campaign started in early June and will run until September 15. Marbella Mayor Ángeles Muñoz said the service was “essential to maintain water quality on our beaches”.
Muñoz pointed out that the three boats, one on the coast and two near the beach, mainly collect plastic, wood and other materials to prevent them from reaching the shore. The service operates from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and until 6 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.
The president of the Mancomunidad, José Antonio Mena, said that this initiative, for which this year the Mancomunidad is fully responsible, “is essential for the cleanliness of our beaches, which we must not forget are the showcase of the Costa del Sol” .
He said this season the umbrella organization that oversees town halls on the western Costa del Sol will allocate a total of 545,000 euros for the service and warned that 75% of waste removed from the water by boats are made of plastic, so he appealed to the public to prevent litter from reaching the sea.
Mena pointed out that in the month of June alone, almost 25 cubic meters of plastic, 3.26 of wood, two of algae and 0.18 of organic material were removed by boats along the Marbella coastline. .
