SpiceJet and Air India to decrease, Vistara to increase weekly domestic flights in winter

SpiceJet has cut domestic services by 31% to 2,995 weekly flights in the upcoming winter schedule, from 4,316 weekly flights approved for the 2019 winter schedule, aviation regulator DGCA said Thursday. Meanwhile, Vistara, another private carrier, increased its domestic services by 22% to 1,675 weekly flights, compared to 1,376 weekly flights it had in the winter 2019 schedule, the regulator added.

The winter schedule begins on October 31 of one year and ends on March 26 of the following year. In total, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) approved 22,287 weekly domestic flights from Indian carriers for the 2021 winter program. This number is 4% lower than the 21,307 weekly flights approved for the 2021 program. winter 2019.

From May 25, 2020 to October 18, 2021, Indian carriers operated domestic flights with restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The restrictions were lifted by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on October 18.

“As a result, the 2021 winter program has been approved without capacity restrictions as submitted by scheduled national airlines,” the DGCA said on Thursday. According to its data, Air India – which was sold to the Tata Group earlier this month – will operate 9% fewer weekly domestic flights in the upcoming winter schedule compared to that of 2019.

Go First – formerly known as GoAir – would operate 2,290 weekly domestic flights in the winter 2021 schedule, compared to 2,308 weekly domestic services in the winter 2019 schedule, according to data shared by the DGCA. A total of 1,393 AirAsia India domestic flights have been approved for the 2021 winter schedule, according to the data, compared to 1,345 domestic flights approved for the same period in 2019.

With little change, India’s largest carrier IndiGo will operate 10,243 weekly domestic flights during the upcoming winter schedule, up from 10,310 weekly flights approved for the same period in 2019. Regional carrier Star Air will operate 137 weekly domestic flights in during the 2021 winter program compared to 62 weekly services for the same period in 2019, the data mentioned.
