The 5 Questions: Susan Hickam Discusses Lafayette House Fundraising | Local News

1. What is Lafayette House’s annual Ooh-La Lafayette event?

Ooh-La Lafayette is the annual fundraising event for Lafayette House.

This event allows us to raise awareness of the causes and effects of domestic violence, sexual assault and substance use disorders. Ooh-La shares our mission to be a safe sanctuary, providing compassionate and nurturing services to heal the effects of domestic violence, sexual assault, and substance use disorders.

Each year, Lafayette House serves more than 1,000 people by providing professional, compassionate, and trauma-informed services for adults, children, and families in Southwestern Missouri.

2. When will Ooh-La Lafayette take place this year and where can I buy tickets?

This year, Ooh-La Lafayette will take place on Thursday, April 7. Tickets go on sale Monday, February 7 and can be purchased on our website, https://lafayettehouse.org.

3. How does Ooh-La Lafayette benefit Lafayette House?

All proceeds from our Ooh-La Lafayette event go directly to Lafayette House, allowing us to continue to provide quality services at no cost to our customers. Our services include, but are not limited to, 24/7 phone support; emergency and residential shelter; case management; advice, including individual advice, group advice, family therapy and therapy for children; babysitting services; transport; meals prepared on site daily; access to a registered nurse; transitional housing; and job readiness training.

4. Why is Ooh-La Lafayette a major fundraiser for Lafayette House, especially in the midst of the pandemic?

Ooh-La Lafayette contributes to hope. During the event, we share customer testimonials where hope was received and dreams of a safe and peaceful future came true.

During the pandemic, our doors have never closed. Ooh-La Lafayette allows us to modify and offer additional services, while taking all necessary precautions to deal with threats from the virus so that threats of abuse or addiction are never a barrier to services.

5. What do you hope to accomplish with this year’s fundraiser?

Community contribution is the basis of our program funding and essential to keeping Lafayette House open to vulnerable families in need of services.

Susan Hickham is the executive director of Lafayette House.
